Women in Ethiopian Energy--Joining Hands to Make a Lasting Impact on Societies' Energy Use

The Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy, #MoWIE, of Ethiopia hosted a Week of Water and Energy, #EWEW, with a theme of ‘ Transforming of the Water and Energy Sectors for Ethiopia’s New Horizon of Hope ‘ in Skylight hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The program was officially opened on 7 June 2019 by her Excellency Ambassador Sahlework Zewde, the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and it will continue up to 20 June 2019 covering different thematic areas.

#EWEW,  the first of its kind to be held in Ethiopia, wishes to foster a new and #innovative #ideas through meaningful and open discussion in four parallel tracks, i.e.,WASH,Water Resources and River Basins, Irrigation, and Energy using a range of formats: panel discussions, speaker presentations, exhibitions, and showcases providing a platform that will enable #MoWIE and other government organizations, academics from universities and research centers; private sector practitioners, development partners, NGOs, and international experts to join together to explore contemporary agendas, emerging directions and future challenges that are at the forefront of the country’s water and energy strategies and policies, according to the press release of the Ministry.
The turnout of the audience to attend the opening ceremony and the subsequent sessions was extraordinary without an exaggeration.
Talking of innovation and new ideas, there comes Ethiopian Women in Energy Network, #EWiEN,showcased at the exhibition of #EWEW. Born after Open Africa Power 2019, #OAP2019, an educational gathering that took place in Addis Ababa in February 2019 fully sponsored by #Enelfoundation, Ethiopian Women in Energy Network, #EWiEN, was launched by a wonderful young Ethiopia women energy leaders with a mission of empowering women in the energy sector through networking and training.
Given the fact that women are at a huge disadvantage in Ethiopia when it comes to accessing clean energy sources, initiatives such as #EWiEN will play a key role helping alleviate the access challenge and the #gender gap in the country and requires every ones attention and support, especially the government and the donor community more importantly right at the beginning.
Similar initiatives such as the African Women in Energy development initiative, #AwediNetwork, has already become a common platform for Women in Energy in Nigeria and with a potential of scale up to the rest of the African countries.
Kudos to the young women shouldering this timely and challenging responsibility.
